Broward County JROTC History
The Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) was created by the National Defence Act of 1916. Few realize that the original program was mandatory for high schools across the nation but voluntary at the college level. The Junior ROTC program was established in Broward County at Fort Lauderdale High School in 1973. The program expanded to four high schools in the early 1980's and in 1993, amidst increased interest, grew to 14 schools. In the past 13 years, Broward's Junior ROTC membership has grown to its current 26 programs with an annual enrollment of over 5,000 student cadets. SY 2008-2009 will see a new JROTC program added with the opening of West Broward High School. All four branches, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force, of the U.S. Military are represented. Broward County has earned the designation as the largest Junior ROTC program in the State of Florida and the fourth largest in the nation.
For all high schools, the Bronze Medal and Ribar Awards are the only awards that can be awarded to all High Schools.
(Silver Medals are for colleges and Gold Medals are for Universities only)
