AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS REPORT
SEPTEMBER 2008
July 2008
The Riders participated in a Joint benefit with ALR Post 277 Boca Raton to raise money for the children of a fallen solder Tony Capra. Army Specialist Capra was killed in Iraq leaving behind his wife and 5 kids. The event raised more then $25,000 for his kid's education.
July 2008
The American Legion riders, from both District 9 & 11 along with the Patriot Guard rode up to Palm Beach International air port to welcome home Kevin Harvic who was injured in Iraq and just spent 9 month at Walter Reed Hospital . Along with over 60 bikers he was welcomed home by over 250 people including State and local Dignitaries. He left PBIA in a Stretch limo escorted by PBSO and the 60 bikers to his home in Jupiter. It was quite a site to see. Kevin was going to be home for a few weeks and then return back to Walter Reed for another series of surgeries.
July 2008
ALR Post 162 Deerfield Beach along with ALR post 268 Riviera Beach road up to Wellington FL to escort the players onto the Base Ball field for the American Legion All Star base ball game. We Left Deerfield in the pouring rain road all the way up to Wellington , and just as we got to the field the lightning detectors went off, and the game was canceled. We are going to try to be there for the closing ceremonies in the fall.
July 2008
Attended the American Legion Riders conference in Orlando.
Aug 2008
American Legion Riders Post 162 Deerfield Beach sponsored their first annual Poker Run. It was not the greatest weather, but had about 50 bikes attend and over 200 people. It was a great success, for our first event as a new charter.
Aug 2008
We donated time at the South Florida Tattoo convention to help raise money for Joe DiMaggio's Children's hospital. The final take on the 3 day event was over $65,000. All proceeds go to Joe DiMaggio's hospital. We were also invited back in December to help with the South Florida Toy Run, also to benefit Joe DiMaggio.
Aug 2008
Received a call from Commander David Knapp of the 11th District. He was contacted by A WWII Vet whose home was destroyed by hurricane Wilma. Almost 3 years ago. As always the ALR got together both from District 9 & 11 and went to his home to try to help. Unfortunately the damage was too advanced for us to do anything with. We cleared a path gave him an area to sit and watch TV, and made him as comfortable as we could. Commander Knapp is working with different veterans agencies to get him the help he needs. I am in constant contact with Commander Knapp, and as soon as a new plan is in place the ALR will be there again to help.
Sept 2008
Collecting men's clothing for the Stand down House in Lake Worth FL , we plan on bringing the donated close up there in Mid October.
Sept 2008
We are starting our ALR Gift Card for the Veterans program once again this year. We are razing money to buy gift cards in small denominations to give to the Veterans hospital, so the patients can get some of the things they need at local stores such as Wall mart, Publix etc.
Thanks
